Gay Festivals Around the World

Being a product of the modern gay rights movement of the 1960’s, gay festivals are celebrated as part of the gay culture in almost all corners of the world. Gay festivals provide an opportunity for the gay, lesbian, and transgender community to come out and celebrate its diversity. It is where the community can show off their pride, and in doing so, send a message of tolerance and acceptance to the entire world.

Argentina

In Argentina, the annual gay pride festival is usually celebrated in October or November in Buenos Aires. This festival is a call to justice in a country that is slowly moving towards change as it pertains to gay rights. At a focal point is the discrimination of gay and transgender individuals in the work place. Overall, the festival promises a day of music and entertainment with local celebrities.

USA

Every major city in the United States holds annual gay festivals. The most popular of these occur in New York, San Francisco, and Miami. Lasting an entire week in June, the New York festival, ends with the famous NYC gay parade which draws thousands of New Yorkers from all walks of life. In San Francisco, the annual gay festival runs for two days in June, and it is heavily focused around the issue of gay marriage. Miami’s gay festival runs in combination with the South Beach Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. This event runs in the month of April and draws an international crowd, showcasing their film and art. While all three festivals provide a lot of fun and entertainment, it is also an opportunity for the gay and lesbian community to canvas, and educate each other about causes affecting their community, from aids, to homeless gay youth, and hate crimes.
